Inventory mismanagement is rampant across the industry despite the best efforts of operations managers, employees, and companies. Mismanagement results in canceled orders due to inventory shortages, which in turn, lead to revenue losses.
Deciding to use inventory management software is the right step, but how do you justify the ROI when you’re already suffering losses? The solution is free inventory management software.
But why free software?
First, it doesn’t cost you anything. This provides the ROI justification to implement it. Second, it helps you improve the customer experience you have to offer. The free software automatically tracks your inventory and alerts you in case of shortage. With this automation, you can significantly reduce the chances of order cancellation.
A free inventory management solution will trigger business growth in two ways: you save on software costs and reduce revenue losses due to canceled orders.
To help you find the right free software for your business, we’ve analyzed the reviews and functionalities of about 90 free and open source inventory management solutions listed on Capterra. Of these solutions, we then shortlisted the best five tools.
This article looks at five highly rated free inventory management software options. See the full list of free inventory management software solutions here.
What does “best” mean? Each of the five tools included in this piece has a minimum user rating of 4.0 over the past year. You can find our full methodology here. We’ve sorted this list in alphabetical order.

Overall we are very excited about the program and think it will serve our needs very well. We have many employees, docents, and public visitors who use our library. We wanted a user-friendly program that would allow them to search for books on their area of interest. We also wanted a program that would allow some users to enter & edit data, but prevent others from doing that. We even reviewed programs costing thousands of dollars, but liked your program best.
I have been searching for a easy inexpensive program for the small library we have at Florida Medical Training Institute. When I came across the primasoft Small library I knew it was just what the school needed. This program is so easy to use it is like a dream come true. When I have to print a report of our holdings for the accrediting agency, it;s just click, click click and done. Thank you Primasoft for providing a program that doesn't need a rocket scientist to figure out how to work it. Sally C. (Florida Medical Training Institute)
After vetting many programs and finding that most were too complex for our minimalist cataloging needs, I found one that offered great ease in importing Excel files to populate library records and more importantly borrower information. .. Simple Library Organizer by PrimaSoft fit the bill and even better, when I started to ask questions about using custom metadata fields for borrower information like Stateroom Number and Departure Date, PrimaSoft simple added the fields and offered me a fully customized solution. This is one of the only library software products specifically for use on a cruise ship.
book automated cataloging (auto call numbers): ' I got it! Awesome! I#m sorry to keep asking for me, but if you can do it, it saves me a TON of work! Can the leading space in this generated Call field be removed as part of the script? That would be fantastic! Thanks so much for the great help!, Michelle P.
I am running a community library and I installed Small library Organiser Pro, which is a fantastic product and I am recommending it to all the new community libraries that are opening because of the UKs budget cuts.
I am with the Missouri Local Technical Assistance Program. We are wanting to organize all of our literature and make it available to our clients. We originally thought a library system would work but we need the ability to track the quantity of each booklet, CD, DVD, etc. that we have. Another issue is that not all of the material in intend on coming back, and once that item is gone we need our inventory to reflect that change. We also need the ability to use a bar scanner with the system. Is there any one of your programs that is best suited for our needs?
I have downloaded free trial versions of your book library software; Small Library Organizer Pro, Church Library Organizer Pro and Simple Library Organizer Pro. I'm in the mist of evaluating these pieces of your work. Our school is a Christian one with grades K-12. Our two libraries one for K-6 and the one contain a number of books, videos and other material number much less than 2,000 items. The part time librarian has intermediate computer experience. My wife and I would buy the software necessary to establish this library. Of course we would like buy the product we need as low as possible. The price paid would depend on the software selected, etc. With all the information suggested so far, what version of your library software would be appropriate for our school to use. Include in your reply its cost.
